The primary mission of the Ward 1 Constable is the service of process, seizures, evictions, and civil mandates of the Ward 1 Justice of the Peace. Even though the Constable’s position is a part-time job, full-time attention is needed to insure quality service to our constituents.

The secondary mission of the Constable’s Office is the service of process from other courts. Courts from other jurisdictions send process to our office for proper and punctual service.

All cases must be filed through the Justice of the Peace. These include evictions, citations, garnishments, and etc.

 

The Justice of the Peace can preside over civil matters not exceeding $5000 in value or rents/leases not exceeding $5000 per month.

 

The JP also performs weddings parish-wide.

Introducing Catherine “Cathy” Michiels, Justice of the Peace, Ward One.

Justice Cathy Michiels

The Justice of the Peace is the court of the people. JPs are judges of limited jurisdiction. They may hear most civil cases, evictions, suits and the are ex-officio notaries for vehicle titles and transfers.

The JP can hear suits up to $5,000 (not including court costs and attorney fees).

 

As Justice of the Peace, Cathy can perform weddings throughout Calcasieu Parish and in most parishes in Southwest Louisiana.

 

Cathy retired from state employment where she worked closely with the courts and has directed the state’s legal team in such matters.
